On April 11 1895 José Martí
landed here with general Maximo
Gomez and four others to start the Second War of Independence
against Spain. They soon met with Antonio
Maceo who landed not very far away in Duabo. Soon after the meeting
Jose Marti was killed by the Spanish at Dos
Rios on May 19, 1895.
