The fortress was build by the Spaniards between 1763 and 1774. Many Cuban
patriots were killed by firing squads here. During the time of dictators
Machado and Batista it was used as a military prison. After the Cuban
Revolution Fidel set up is headquarters in the Havana Hilton, while Che
Guevara set up his headquarters immediately in this fortress.
