(CW 2001)
socnature001.jpg (91599 bytes)

At this spot Fidel Castro proclaimed the socialistic nature of the Cuban Revolution on April 16, 1961. It was during the burial service for the people who were killed by a counterrevolutionary raid on a Havana air base the day before. A bronze plaque at the wall of the building on the corner of calle 23 and Calle 12 commemorates Fidel's speech.

Havana, Monumento a las Victimas del Maine

(CW 2001)
maine001.jpg (48171 bytes)

Erected in 1926 this monument is dedicated to the victims of the explosion of the USA-battleship "Maine". At the end of the second War of Independence the Maine was at anchor in Havana to protect USA-civilians in Cuba. Under suspicious circumstances the Maine blew up in the harbor. The incident was the pretext for the USA to declare war to Spain and after a battle in Santiago de Cuba occupy Cuba. Some theories are that the USA blew up their own ship to step into the war. Certainly most of the staff was ashore when the Maine blew up.

The text on the monument reads:

"A las victimas de El Maine que fueron sacrificados por la voracidad imperialista en su afan de apoderarse de la Isla de Cuba".

Translated:

"To the victims of the Maine who were sacrificed by voracious imperialism in its desire to gain control of the Island of Cuba".

Havana, Necropolis Cristobal Colon

(CW 2001)

colon001.jpg (62215 bytes) A very big cemetery with some very famous graves. There is the tomb of General Maximo Gomez, the monument to the martyrs of the 1957 assault on the presidential palace. Like most cemeteries in Cuba there is a Pantheon to the Revolutionary Armed Forces. Here  many soldiers are buried who died fighting in other countries like Angola. On the tomb of Orthodox party leader Eduardo Chibas, Fidel Castro made his political debut. At the burial ceremony of Chibas, Fidel jumped on top of his grave and made a fiery speech denouncing the corrupt establishment. We can only hope for the family of Chibas that Fidel didn't speech as long as he is used to.

Havana, Plaza de la Revolucion

(CW 1999)

Of course Havana has his own Plaza de la Revolucion like most cities in Cuba. This is the place where big mass meetings are held like May Day celebrations. The square is surrounded by some very well known buildings and monuments. First of all the 142 meter high memorial of Jose Marti. On top of the memorial is a 17 meter high statue of Jose Marti, made by Juan Jose Sicre. Inside the memorial is a museum dedicated to the life of Jose. From here you can take the elevator to the top of the memorial. Behind the memorial is the building of the Comite Central del Partido Communista de Cuba.

Another well known building is the Ministry of the interior with the big mural of Che Guevara.

Havana, Statue of John Lennon
